What is hobby horsing?

Have you ever seen a girl or boy holding a plush horse on a stick and jumping over obstacles or rhythmically trotting? Well, then you have just witnessed hobby horsing. A new sport that came to us from Finland and is increasingly gaining popularity.

History of hobby horsing

Although this sport may seem entirely new, its roots go back several centuries. Evidence of this can be found, for example, in Spanish oil paintings from the 16th century, mentioned in Laurence Sterne's work "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy."

Hobby horsing experienced its biggest wave of popularity in Finland after the release of the film "Hobbyhorsing Revolution" by Selma Vilhunen. Over five years, she gradually filmed various practitioners and their stories.

So, what is hobby horsing about?

Hobby horsing imitates riding real horses, and riders have the opportunity to compete in several disciplines, such as dressage, show jumping, high jump, or western riding. Competitors are usually divided into several age categories and assessed by judges.

More than just a sport

Although hobby horsing is recognized as an official sport in several countries, it's something more. It encourages imagination, creativity, a love for animals, and fosters new friendships among riders.

Here at JUHI, we believe that if you try hobby horsing, you'll love it just as much as we do.
